National real estate developer, Skilken Gold, announced today the completion of its latest retail project, a 52,401-square-foot Publix supermarket located in the Westpark Shopping Center at 9645 W. Broad Street in Glen Allen, Virginia, a growing suburb of Richmond. The Publix store, which anchors the shopping center, opened its doors to the public on May 29.
Skilken Gold began the development at the site, in March 2018, with the demolition of the former Martin Foods Market and fuel station to make way for the new ground-up Publix store. The shopping center, owed by InvenTrust Properties, and all its existing tenants remained fully operational during the development’s aggressive 13-month timeline.
“A project like this is tricky, because of the building’s location in the middle of the shopping center,” said Ken Gold, Skilken Gold’s CEO. “Adjacent tenants were virtually sharing walls with a building that needed to be torn down, before it could be rebuilt, and their businesses needed to remain open and profitable during the development.”
“We worked extensively with Publix and Inventrust, long before construction began, to create a strategic site-access and construction-sequencing plan that would minimize the impact of construction,” Gold added. “The entire team, including general contractors Century Construction, was committed to providing a quality experience for Westpark retailers and customers.”
According to Gold, the development also entailed comprehensive infrastructure upgrades, including re-grading the entire parking lot.
